What is Network Switching: Definition & Its Types?

In a network switching, there are multiple paths to transmit information from one place to another place. There are various networks switching to transfer of information from one place to another place. The network switching technique will decide to the best path for sending information from one place to another place. In switching technique the system make one to one communication.

What Is Network Switching?

Network switching is a technique in which the data is receive from one point to another point and in network switching the path will be already design. Through this design path the information will be transmitted. When the data entering a port is ingress and leave a port is called egress. In communication system there are many numbers of switching and nodes

The switching technique has two important categories which are given below:

  • Connectionless: The information is transmitted on the reference of forwarding table. In this method only acknowledgements and previous handshaking is required.
  • Connection Oriented: In connection oriented there is need to establish the connection between sender to receiver. When the connection is setup the data is ready to transmitted through the path

When communication between two points with dedicated path is known as circuit switching. The best example of circuit swathing is telephone network in which the sender send data and receiver receive receives the data. When the channel busy than on other can use this channel. In circuit switching there are three phase which area given below,

  • Establish a circuit
  • Transfer the data
  • Disconnect the circuit

  2. When the path decided, it will exit till the communication and when communication is end the connection will be terminate.
  3. This network switching is the example of way as the telephone works.
  4. A complete route to the end must be in place before the connection can take place.
  5. In the case of a circuit switch, if any user wants to send data, voice, video, the request signal is sent to the recipient and the recipient returns the acknowledgment to ensure the availability of a dedicated method. After receiving approval, the dedicated method transfers the data.
  6. Circuit switching is used in the public telephone network for voice communication.
  7. Fixed data can be transferred on time to circuit switching technology.

Advantage of Circuit Network switching

  1. It is real time service.
  2. It is reliable.
  3. It is garneted.
  4. The path is well defined.

Disadvantage of Circuit Network switching

  1. Receiver availability is essential.
  2. It is not efficient.
  3. It is costly.

Message Network Switching

  • Message Switching is a method of switching where the message is transmitted as a whole unit to the central nodes where it is work like stored and forwarded.
  • In the Message Switching Strategy, there is no dedicated starting and ending path only defined destination address.
  • In this technique the destination address added in information. Due to this it provide no fixed path.
  • Message switches are designed in such a way that they can provide the most efficient routes.
  • Each node saves the entire message and transfers it to the next location. This type of network is known as the store and forward network.
  • In this technique each massage in independent.

  1. It is not a real time switching.
  2. It is not reliable.

Packet Switching

  • In this method of switching where the message is sent once, but is divided into smaller pieces, and is sent individually.
  • Packet is the pieces of massage which are divided into small part. And this packet is assigned a different number to indicate their destination.
  • Each packet contains information and the address defined a unique number on the headers on it.
  • Packets will travel any path of the network and finding shortest route possible.
  • All packets are reassembled at the destination and resemble it in order.
  • If any package is missing or damaged, the receiver informs the sender.
  • Once the correct package order is reached, a confirmation message will be sent.

  2. It is efficient.

  1. It is not a real time switching.
  2. It is not reliable.

  5. It is costly.
